A guide to Kochkor and Song-Kul
Kochkor is a quiet farming town in the high valley of Naryn region, sitting at 1,800 metres above sea level. Most travelers know it as the gateway to Song-Kul lake, but the town and surrounding valleys have a charm of their own. It is Kyrgyzstan's center for traditional felt craft, and a relaxed place to rest between the capital and the mountains. Our family farm is about 3 km, or five minutes by car, from the centre of Kochkor: close enough for an easy trip into town and far enough to enjoy the quiet.
Things to do
Trips to Song-Kul Lake
Song-Kul is a stunning alpine lake at 3,016 metres, surrounded by summer pastures (jailoo) where semi-nomadic shepherds graze their horses and sheep. Kochkor is the most popular base for organizing trips there. You can hire a 4WD taxi over the Kalmak-Ashu or "33 Parrots" pass, or take a two- to three-day horse trek through the mountains. The lake is accessible from mid-June to mid-September, when the passes are clear of snow.
Shyrdak Felt Workshops & Cooperatives
Kochkor is famous across Central Asia for shyrdak craft, the handmade mosaic felt carpets recognized by UNESCO. Women's cooperatives in town, such as Altyn Kol, offer demonstrations where you can watch how wool is washed, dyed with natural colors, cut into traditional patterns, and quilted by hand. You can also buy authentic carpets directly from the craftswomen who make them.
Sunday Livestock Market
If you are in Kochkor on a Sunday morning, wake up early and visit the livestock market just outside town. Farmers and shepherds from all over the valley gather from 06:00 to 10:00 to buy and trade horses, sheep, cows, and fodder. It is busy, authentic, and offers a real look into rural Kyrgyz life.
Kol-Ukok Lake Hike
For travelers who want a mountain hike without the long drive to Song-Kul, Kol-Ukok is a hidden alpine lake tucked into the Terskey Ala-Too range south of Kochkor. The trail follows a mountain stream past summer shepherd yurts to the lake at 3,000 metres. It makes an excellent day hike or an overnight horseback trip.
Chon-Tuz Salt Mine
Located about 25 km west of Kochkor, Chon-Tuz is a historic salt cave sanatorium carved into the mountain. Visitors can walk into the cool, mineral-rich tunnels, which are known for treating respiratory ailments.
Getting here
From Bishkek
Kochkor is about 215 km southeast of Bishkek, and the drive takes roughly 3 to 3.5 hours via the scenic Boom Gorge on a well-paved highway (A365). Shared minibus (marshrutka): Minibuses depart throughout the morning and afternoon from Bishkek's Western bus station. The ride costs around 250–300 som per seat. Shared taxi: Shared cars leave from the same station once all four seats fill up. They are faster and cost about 400–600 som per seat.
From Lake Issyk-Kul
Kochkor sits only 50 km (about 45 minutes) southwest of Balykchy at the western tip of Lake Issyk-Kul. If you are traveling along the south shore from Bokonbaevo or Tamga, take a minibus to Balykchy and switch to a Kochkor car in minutes.
From Naryn
If you are traveling north from Naryn or returning from Tash Rabat, Kochkor is about 115 km (roughly two hours) along the paved A365 highway over the scenic Dolon Pass (3,030 m). Shared taxis and minibuses leave regularly from Naryn's bus station and cost around 250–350 som per seat.
From Kochkor to the farm
Our farm is about 3 km, or five minutes by car, from the centre of Kochkor, right by the woods and Chuy river. A local taxi from the bus stand takes five minutes. If you are driving yourself, we have free private parking on site.
Practical tips
- Cash & ATMs: The farm and local markets take cash in Kyrgyz som (KGS). Kochkor has several reliable 24-hour ATMs in the town centre (Optima Bank, Demir Bank, RSK) that accept Visa and Mastercard.
- Weather & clothing: Summer days in Kochkor are pleasantly warm and sunny, but at 1,800 metres the temperature drops quickly after sunset. Nights at Song-Kul are cold even in July, so pack warm layers, a windbreaker, and sturdy shoes.
- Connectivity: Kochkor has reliable 4G coverage on all major Kyrgyz networks (O!, Beeline, MegaCom). You can buy a local SIM card in town or upon arrival at Manas Airport in Bishkek.
Where to stay
Instead of a hotel in town, stay on our family farm five minutes away. We have three guest yurts (a twin for two, a family yurt with a double bed and two singles, and a four-bed yurt for friends), plus a dining yurt where we share meals. Enjoy homemade Kyrgyz cooking, meet the farm animals, and walk down to the river right behind the property.
